Inhalt
The course will explore the complex topic of ancient mobility from the joint perspectives of Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology, examined within a solid theoretical and methodological framework. The seminar will have two main areas of focus, namely the means of transportation, and the reasons for mobility.We will be discussing aspects of movement and reasons for mobility, from warfare to trade and diplomacy, to leisure, and critically analyse the various types of available sources, including texts and material culture as well as wider questions about globalisation, colonialism and imperialism in the Bronze Age.
After the seminar the students will be able to
- identify and critically evaluate key factors influencing mobility in Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East;
- explain and critically assess concepts of imperialism, colonialism, expansion, and globalisation in pre-modern societies;
- compare and discuss different means and modes of transportation as well as concepts of travel and borders;
- analyse and interpret textual and material sources on mobility using relevant theoretical approaches.
Successful completion of the course requires active engagement in seminar discussions, preparatory work, homework assignments, and group activities. Depending on the modular affiliation the students have to give (project-related) presentations and/or write a seminar work.
Options for hybrid participation will be discussed during the first session.
The language of the class will be English; presentations can be held either in German or English.
