Rituals for the King: Text Analysis, Strategies of Tradition, and the Creation of Royal Ideology among the Hittites

Funded by the German-Italian Exchange Program VIGONI of the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD and the Italian CRUI, a team at the University of Florence (Dr. G. Torri, Dr. C. Corti) and one at Mainz University (Prof. Dr. D. Prechel, Dr. S. Görke, M. Lepši M.A.) collaborated for two years, 2010 and 2011.

A completely new approach to the interpretation of Hittite royal ideology was made by means of analysing, among others, the Hittite foundation rituals (CTH 413-415, 725, 726). An examination of their linguistic features as well as their contents was combined with an investigation of the find spots and the archives in order to obtain new insights into the mechanisms of the storage of knowledge among the Hittites. Results were, among others, that the rituals of Old Hittite origin CTH 726, 725 and 414 provide a sequence of the history of creation of Hittite kingship, and that Building A on Büyükkale in Ḫattuša was especially important for the legitimacy of the Hittite dynasty.
